The Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam (ERAV) and the Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority (EREA) under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, along with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), have officially signed an agreement to implement a project on promoting the energy transition in Vietnam (TEV).
The project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), has a total value of 4 million EUR and will concentrate on three main areas to support Vietnam’s energy transition. They include sharing expertise and lessons learned to help the Ministry of Industry and Trade develop solutions to fulfil international commitments on sustainable energy, establishing new legal frameworks and regulations to create a solid foundation for energy transition activities, and providing advanced technological knowledge to experts and managers to contribute to the modernisation of Vietnam’s energy sector.
Michaela Baur, GIZ Country Director for Vietnam, expressed her delight that the TEV project will be built on over 15 years of successful collaboration between the Ministry of Industry and Trade and GIZ.
She highlighted impactful projects previously implemented, such as the Smart Grid project and the Rooftop Solar Power project in the commercial and industrial sectors, which recently concluded.
The GIZ Country Director emphasised Germany’s commitment to sharing expertise and experience to support Vietnam in achieving a sustainable, affordable, and reliable energy future.
The TEV project serves as a cornerstone of technical cooperation between Vietnam and Germany. Additionally, it aligns with the objectives of the Just Energy Transition Partnerships (JETP) between Vietnam and the G7+ countries, as outlined in the JETP Resource Mobilisation Plan.
Representatives from ERAV and EREA affirmed the significance of the TEV project for Vietnam, particularly in addressing challenges related to emissions reduction and renewable energy development. Collaborating with GIZ will help strengthen the two agencies’ capacity and access international expertise in energy transition.
Trinh Quoc Vu, Deputy Director of ERAV, emphasised that the TEV agreement marks an important milestone in the project’s implementation, further solidifying the strong partnership between the two nations.
In the coming period, ERAV and EREA requested that GIZ maximise resource support to enhance management and regulatory capacity to ensure Vietnam’s energy transition roadmap is effective and sustainable while contributing to the country’s emission reduction goals.
Tang The Hung, Deputy Director of EREA, highlighted that ensuring energy security in the coming years is a significant challenge, and it is equally crucial to ensure that the energy transition process is equitable.
He expressed hope that the project will focus on supporting central and local agencies, as well as businesses in improving capacity, refining legal frameworks, and raising awareness about energy transition.
The TEV project is designed to have a long-term and comprehensive impact on Vietnam’s energy transition to promote sustainable development and help Vietnam transition to a green economy, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
This initiative is part of broader efforts to meet Vietnam’s international climate change commitments while enhancing the nation’s position in global energy forums.
With the commitment of the German government and close cooperation between GIZ and the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam is expected to accelerate its energy transition, contributing to a low-carbon economy and sustainable development.
