This is part of Vietnam’s commitment to enforce extended producer responsibility (EPR), as outlined in the Environmental Protection Law approved by the National Assembly in 2020.

The recycling requirements are applicable to manufacturers and importers with total revenue in the previous year exceeding VND30 billion and VND20 billion, respectively. Small and medium-sized enterprises are exempt from these requirements.

Businesses are required to recycle waste and cartons proportionate to the total volumes of products launched onto the market or imported. Accordingly, the compulsory recycling rates are set at 5% for rubber tires and tubes, 8-12% for batteries, and 10-22% for cartons. Businesses can opt for multiple recycling solutions.

According to the roadmap, the electrical and electronic sector will be required to recycle products starting from January 1, 2025. Meanwhile, the automotive and motorcycle industries are required to do the recycling from 2027.
