Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha has directed stricter emission standards for all road vehicles, including imports and locally assembled models, while urging the rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).

During a meeting on January 2, Ha instructed relevant ministries to establish higher emission standards for road vehicles and devise a roadmap for transitioning to cleaner fuels.

The Government is set to roll out policies incentivizing the shift from gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles to electric and other clean energy alternatives.

Local governments, particularly in major urban centers like Hanoi and HCMC, will need to enforce stricter vehicle management in heavily polluted areas. Measures may include restrictions on high-emission vehicles.

Specific tasks have been assigned to key ministries. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will define new emission standards for existing vehicles, pinpoint areas requiring stricter restrictions, review land use for green transport, and adopt international best practices in green financing.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade will update the fuel conversion roadmap, promote clean fuels, and assess electricity pricing for EV charging stations.

The Ministry of Finance will implement economic incentives to encourage cleaner transport, support the EV transition, and prioritize green vehicles in government procurement.
