The inauguration ceremony of the Soc Son waste-to-energy plant took place on October 13 in Trung Gia Commune, jointly organized by the Hanoi People’s Committee and China’s CNTY-EUZY Group, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
Developed by Thien Y Hanoi Environment Energy JSC, a member of CNTY-EUZY Group, the US$320-million project began construction in August 2019 and officially joined the national power grid in July 2022. The plant employs advanced mechanical grate incineration technology from Belgium, meeting European and Vietnamese environmental standards.
After more than three years of trial operation, the WTE facility now operates stably, processing about 70% of Hanoi’s daily household waste. It handles at least two-thirds of the city’s total solid waste, converting it into 90 MW of electricity each day to supply the national grid with clean energy.
Hanoi produces around 8,000 tons of waste daily, according to city officials. The operation of the Soc Son plant marks a key step in the capital’s environmental protection and sustainable development strategy.
City authorities have also instructed relevant agencies to develop plans to treat around one million cubic meters of old, buried waste at the Nam Son solid waste treatment complex, aiming to completely remove long-standing waste within the next five to seven years.
