International community ready to support Vietnam in energy transition, climate response

In a video message to the press conference, UN Resident Coordinator in Vietnam Pauline Tamesis said the UN is ready to support Vietnam in building a pipeline of projects capable of absorbing financing mobilised under the Political Declaration on establishing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), as well as from global climate finance sources, including the Green Climate Fund and the Loss and Damage Fund.

The French and Brazilian Embassies in Hanoi on December 11 jointly held a press conference marking the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement on climate change and highlighting the outcomes of the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP30), recently concluded in Belém, Brazil.

Addressing the event, French Ambassador Olivier Brochet underlined that after a decade, the Paris Agreement is proving effective, with projected global warming reduced from 4°C in 2015 to around 2.3°C-2.5°C following COP30, though this remains higher than the 2°C target.

The diplomat affirmed that the Paris Agreement is working thanks to countries’ commitments and stands as a powerful demonstration of what multilateralism and the UN system can achieve.

Brazilian Ambassador Marco Farani noted that Brazil proposed a “roadmap” for phasing out fossil fuels at COP30, an important initial step towards a global commitment to energy transition.

EU Ambassador to Vietnam Julien Guerrier said the EU is proud to be an active, solution-oriented partner of Vietnam and the world’s largest provider of climate finance, contributing 31.7 billion EUR in public climate funds last year to support climate action in developing countries.

Guerrier stressed that the EU is honoured to co-lead the JETP – a “game-changing coalition” aimed at mobilising large-scale resources to help Vietnam achieve a successful energy transition and ensure energy security. He highlighted that during the Global Gateway Forum in Brussels, Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister signed a new 430 million EUR support package with European Development Finance Institutions for JETP, specifically for the local Bac Ai pumped-storage hydropower project, which he described as a “giant battery” enabling Vietnam to integrate more solar and wind power into its grid.

On the sidelines of the event, the French Embassy also showcased a photo exhibition commemorating the 10th anniversary of the Paris Agreement and France’s support for Vietnam in addressing climate change./.
