Da Nang aims for up to three forest carbon projects and credit trading by 2030

This represents a significant step toward converting the value of forest carbon sequestration into financial resources while promoting sustainable forest management.

The People’s Committee of central Da Nang City has approved the “Scheme for Development and Management of Forest Carbon Credits in the locality for the 2026-2030 Period, with a Vision to 2035.”

This represents a significant step toward converting the value of forest carbon sequestration into financial resources while promoting sustainable forest management.

Under the scheme, during the 2026-2030 period, Da Nang will conduct investigations and reviews to determine the current status of its forests, calculate carbon stocks, and classify 100% of forest areas with potential for carbon projects.

The city will also build a primary database, establish baselines, and set Forest Reference Emission Levels/Forest Reference Levels (FREL/FRL). This will create a foundation for a transparent forest carbon management system that supports Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) processes.

The scheme sets a goal for Da Nang to have between one and three forest carbon projects approved by competent authorities by 2030. The city also plans to collaborate with at least two domestic and international partners and complete at least one to two registration dossiers for forest carbon projects and credits.

Notably, the city aims to sign at least one domestic or international carbon credit purchase agreement, ensuring full compliance with legal regulations.

Looking toward 2035, Da Nang intends to finalize and maintain the stable operation of its forest carbon management system. This includes improving the quality of its database, the MRV system, and state management capacity regarding project approval and credit issuance.

The city will also proactively connect its forest carbon credit supply with the domestic carbon market, aligning with the development of the Da Nang International Financial Center and the national carbon trading system following the Government’s roadmap.

According to current statistics, Da Nang has a total forest and afforestation area of over 745,000 ha, of which planted forest area accounts for approximately 241,639 ha.
