The groundbreaking ceremony for the Quang Ninh 1 Wind Power Plant Project was officially held in Hoanh Bo Ward, Quang Ninh Province, northern Vietnam, on April 23.

This marks the first wind power project ever implemented in the province, signaling a pivotal shift toward green and sustainable energy development, reported Radio the Voice of Vietnam.

The project has a total capacity of 200 MW and a total investment of approximately VND7.3 trillion ($278 million). Constructed on forestry land spanning Hoanh Bo Ward and Thong Nhat Commune, the plant will feature 32 modern wind turbines.

Once it becomes operational—expected in 2028—the facility will provide nearly 600 million kWh of clean electricity annually. This output will help stabilize the power supply for Northern Vietnam while contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

For years, Quang Ninh has been recognized as one of Vietnam’s major energy hubs. It currently hosts seven coal-fired thermal power plants with a combined capacity of nearly 5,900 MW, supplying tens of billions of kWh to the national grid each year.

However, in response to the growing demand for sustainable development, emission reductions, and climate change adaptation, Quang Ninh is gradually reducing its reliance on coal. The province is now accelerating the development of renewable energy sources, in line with the National Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8) for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision toward 2050.
