The Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation (Rosatom) will support the construction of nuclear power plants and modern nuclear research centers in Vietnam, Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev told Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in Hanoi on January 13.

Likhachev expressed his honour to meet the Prime Minister for the third time in six months and emphasized Rosatom’s readiness to continue close cooperation with Vietnam.

The corporation is committed to transferring advanced technology and localizing nuclear products for Vietnam, he said, adding cooperation will focus on developing the nuclear science with a long-term vision, utilizing nuclear energy for socio-economic development.

Chinh for his part welcomed Rosatom’s commitment, and shared Vietnam’s aspirations to become a developing country with modern industry and upper-middle-income status by 2030 and a developed, high-income economy by 2045.

To achieve these goals, he said Vietnam aims to restart its nuclear power project to ensure energy security and fulfill its commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

He expected that Russia and Rosatom would continue to cooperate and support Vietnam, not only in developing nuclear power but also in advancing nuclear science and technology for peaceful purposes and socio-economic development.

He suggested that the Russian side provide assistance in training human resources and transfer technology and managerial skills to help Vietnam fully leverage its potential in this field, and enable it to develop its nuclear technology sector.

The PM said he has assigned specific tasks to Vietnamese ministries and agencies to coordinate closely with Russia to swiftly implement cooperation projects based on the principle of “harmonized interests, shared risks.”
